In June 2015, the government announced it would create 3 million apprenticeships by 2020 to tackle the widening skills gaps in the labour market and poor employment opportunities for young people. A large proportion of the cost that will be needed to fund this will be generated by the new Apprenticeship Levy, which was announced in the Autumn 2015 Statement and will come into play on 6th April 2017.
